What Should Women Wear on a First Date?by Sarah Valek
The first date is your chance to make a good impression for yourself. Think of your first date as a blank slate. You may be meeting this special someone for the very first time, or at least the first time when seen through a romantic lens. Through all this hype comes a whole heap of nervousness, and nothing is more critical than deciding what to wear. Relax. There are a few points to keep in mind about what to wear---and what not to wear---but the most important thing is to be yourself and be comfortable.
Use your first date to set the tone of your image, style and personality. Your clothing gives off clues to who you really are and how you want to be perceived by others---especially by your potential suitor. As a general rule, straddle the middle-ground with your outfit. Be modern without being too trendy, be casual without looking like you've just rolled out of bed, and enhance your assets without giving too much away. This may seem like a lot of rules, but it's really not strict at all.
Clothing can either add to your appeal or take away from it. Choose clothing that you know you look good in and is relatively maintenance-free. For example, don't wear a short blouse that you'll spend the whole date pulling down to cover your tummy. Pick clothes that you feel confident in and that aren't too tight or too baggy. Sexiness can turn sleazy if it's uncalled for and out of place. Even though you can never go wrong with black, try adding a splash of color to outfits. Warm colors like peach and pink give off a sense of happiness, passion and warmth. Top off your outfit with personal pieces of jewelry---maybe something that has sentimental value to you.
When planning your outfit, take into consideration what you'll be doing on your date. If you're unsure, ask. Will you be doing the classic dinner-and-a-movie? Are you going to the hippest restaurant in town or a chain restaurant in the mall? Figure out how much walking is involved. If you're going to be outside for a while, you'll want to avoid wearing pumps. Wear comfortable shoes just to be safe. Bring along an extra layer, like a cardigan. Even if it's the middle of summer, you may get chilly in an air-conditioned place. Also, be considerate of your date and avoid wearing too much perfume. Many people have allergies to perfume and the last thing you want is to set off an allergic reaction.
The little black dress is the classic first date outfit. You can modify your dress with a cropped jacket or colored pashmina scarf. A linen and cotton jersey sleeveless top coupled with matching capris is a stylish, casual choice. Layer a cardigan over a flowy dress for a feminine look. You can always pair dark jeans with a sweater or blouse and kitten heels for a hip, yet classic feel.
Don’t try to be someone you’re not. You want your date to like you, not some dolled up unattainable version of you. As long as you’re comfortable, confident and honest, you’ll look fabulous.
