Grilled Honey Barbecue Chicken Recipeby A. Elizabeth Freeman
Add a touch of sweetness to grilled chicken by coating it in a thick, delicious, homemade honey barbecue sauce. If you like your food to be a bit spicy, add a dash of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the barbecue sauce for a pleasant sweet and spicy contrast. If you have leftover sauce, use it to coat grilled vegetables or to garnish the cooked chicken.
Items you will need
- 2 tsp. vegetable oil
- Sauce pan
- 1/2 medium onion, chopped
- Wooden spoon
- 8 oz. ketchup
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and ground black pepper
- Dash cayenne powder or hot sauce (optional)
- 2 small bowls
- Oil or non-stick spray
- Bone-in chicken breasts, thighs and legs
Pour the 2 tbsp. vegetable oil in the saucepan. Place on the stove and heat on medium for a minute, and then add the chopped onion. Cook the onion for five minutes, until soft, translucent and fragrant.
Add ketchup, water, vinegar, honey and Worcestershire sauce. Stir. Heat to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer the sauce for about 15 minutes, or until thick.
Add salt, pepper and the cayenne powder or hot sauce to taste. If saving some sauce for vegetables or to put on the chicken at the table, divide it into two bowls. Set aside.
Heat the grill to medium. Either spray the grill rack with non-stick spray or brush a coating of oil over the chicken.
Grill the chicken for five minutes on each side, and then turn the heat down a bit, cover the grill, and let the chicken cook for up to 40 minutes.
Coat the chicken with the sauce during the final 10 minutes on the grill. Use the brush to spread the sauce evenly over the chicken. Discard any unused sauce in the bowl.
Serve the chicken, passing the extra bowl of barbecue sauce at the table.
